يا أَيُّهَا الَّذينَ آمَنوا خُذوا حِذرَكُم فَانفِروا ثُباتٍ أَوِ انفِروا جَميعًا

O you who believe, take your precautions and advance in units or advance altogether.

وَإِنَّ مِنكُم لَمَن لَيُبَطِّئَنَّ فَإِن أَصابَتكُم مُصيبَةٌ قالَ قَد أَنعَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيَّ إِذ لَم أَكُن مَعَهُم شَهيدًا

Among you, is he who hesitates. If a disaster strikes you, he would say, “God has favored me, since I wasn’t martyred with them.”

وَلَئِن أَصابَكُم فَضلٌ مِنَ اللَّهِ لَيَقولَنَّ كَأَن لَم تَكُن بَينَكُم وَبَينَهُ مَوَدَّةٌ يا لَيتَني كُنتُ مَعَهُم فَأَفوزَ فَوزًا عَظيمًا

Yet, should a bounty from God come your way, he would say, as if there was never any love between you and him, “I wish I had been with them, so I could have achieved a great victory.”

فَليُقاتِل في سَبيلِ اللَّهِ الَّذينَ يَشرونَ الحَياةَ الدُّنيا بِالآخِرَةِ ۚ وَمَن يُقاتِل في سَبيلِ اللَّهِ فَيُقتَل أَو يَغلِب فَسَوفَ نُؤتيهِ أَجرًا عَظيمًا

Therefore, let those who trade this worldly life for the Hereafter fight in God’s path. Whoever fights in God’s path, whether he is slain or victorious, We will grant him a great reward.

وَما لَكُم لا تُقاتِلونَ في سَبيلِ اللَّهِ وَالمُستَضعَفينَ مِنَ الرِّجالِ وَالنِّساءِ وَالوِلدانِ الَّذينَ يَقولونَ رَبَّنا أَخرِجنا مِن هـٰذِهِ القَريَةِ الظّالِمِ أَهلُها وَاجعَل لَنا مِن لَدُنكَ وَلِيًّا وَاجعَل لَنا مِن لَدُنكَ نَصيرًا

Why shouldn’t you fight in God’s path, when the oppressed among men, women, and children implore, “Our Lord, deliver us from this town of oppressive people, and appoint for us from You a protector and appoint for us from You a helper.”?

أَلَم تَرَ إِلَى الَّذينَ قيلَ لَهُم كُفّوا أَيدِيَكُم وَأَقيمُوا الصَّلاةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكاةَ فَلَمّا كُتِبَ عَلَيهِمُ القِتالُ إِذا فَريقٌ مِنهُم يَخشَونَ النّاسَ كَخَشيَةِ اللَّهِ أَو أَشَدَّ خَشيَةً ۚ وَقالوا رَبَّنا لِمَ كَتَبتَ عَلَينَا القِتالَ لَولا أَخَّرتَنا إِلىٰ أَجَلٍ قَريبٍ ۗ قُل مَتاعُ الدُّنيا قَليلٌ وَالآخِرَةُ خَيرٌ لِمَنِ اتَّقىٰ وَلا تُظلَمونَ فَتيلًا

Didn’t you see those who were told, “Hold back your hands, perform the prayer, and give the obligatory charity”? Yet, when fighting was prescribed for them, a group among them feared people as they should fear God, or even more so. They said, “Our Lord, why did You decree fighting upon us? Couldn’t You have postponed it for us for a little while?” Say, “The enjoyment of this world is fleeting, but the Hereafter is better for the righteous, and you won’t be wronged in the slightest.”

أَينَما تَكونوا يُدرِككُمُ المَوتُ وَلَو كُنتُم في بُروجٍ مُشَيَّدَةٍ ۗ وَإِن تُصِبهُم حَسَنَةٌ يَقولوا هـٰذِهِ مِن عِندِ اللَّهِ ۖ وَإِن تُصِبهُم سَيِّئَةٌ يَقولوا هـٰذِهِ مِن عِندِكَ ۚ قُل كُلٌّ مِن عِندِ اللَّهِ ۖ فَمالِ هـٰؤُلاءِ القَومِ لا يَكادونَ يَفقَهونَ حَديثًا

Wherever you may be, death will overtake you, even if you are in fortified towers. If they receive good, they say, “This is from God,” but if misfortune strikes them, they say, “This is from you.” Say, “All is from God.” So, what is wrong with these people, that they hardly understand any statement?

ما أَصابَكَ مِن حَسَنَةٍ فَمِنَ اللَّهِ ۖ وَما أَصابَكَ مِن سَيِّئَةٍ فَمِن نَفسِكَ ۚ وَأَرسَلناكَ لِلنّاسِ رَسولًا ۚ وَكَفىٰ بِاللَّهِ شَهيدًا

Whatever good befalls you is from God, and whatever ill befalls you is from yourself. We sent you as a messenger to the people, and God is sufficient as a witness.

مَن يُطِعِ الرَّسولَ فَقَد أَطاعَ اللَّهَ ۖ وَمَن تَوَلّىٰ فَما أَرسَلناكَ عَلَيهِم حَفيظًا

Whoever obeys the Messenger has obeyed God. As for those who turn away, We didn’t send you as their overseer.

وَيَقولونَ طاعَةٌ فَإِذا بَرَزوا مِن عِندِكَ بَيَّتَ طائِفَةٌ مِنهُم غَيرَ الَّذي تَقولُ ۖ وَاللَّهُ يَكتُبُ ما يُبَيِّتونَ ۖ فَأَعرِض عَنهُم وَتَوَكَّل عَلَى اللَّهِ ۚ وَكَفىٰ بِاللَّهِ وَكيلًا

They profess obedience. But when they leave your presence, a group among them plans during the night something contrary to what you say. God writes down what they plan by night. Turn away from them then, and rely on God. God is enough as a trustee.
