فَكَيفَ إِذا أَصابَتهُم مُصيبَةٌ بِما قَدَّمَت أَيديهِم ثُمَّ جاءوكَ يَحلِفونَ بِاللَّهِ إِن أَرَدنا إِلّا إِحسانًا وَتَوفيقًا

How about when a misfortune strikes them because of what they’ve done? Then they come to you, swearing by God, “We intended nothing but goodwill and conciliation.”

أُولـٰئِكَ الَّذينَ يَعلَمُ اللَّهُ ما في قُلوبِهِم فَأَعرِض عَنهُم وَعِظهُم وَقُل لَهُم في أَنفُسِهِم قَولًا بَليغًا

Those are the ones whom God knows what’s in their hearts. So, turn away from them, admonish them, and speak to them with insightful words.

وَما أَرسَلنا مِن رَسولٍ إِلّا لِيُطاعَ بِإِذنِ اللَّهِ ۚ وَلَو أَنَّهُم إِذ ظَلَموا أَنفُسَهُم جاءوكَ فَاستَغفَرُوا اللَّهَ وَاستَغفَرَ لَهُمُ الرَّسولُ لَوَجَدُوا اللَّهَ تَوّابًا رَحيمًا

We sent no Messenger, but to be obeyed by the leave of God. If they had only, when they wronged themselves, come to you and asked God’s forgiveness, and the Messenger had asked forgiveness for them, they would’ve found God Accepting of repentance, Most Merciful.

فَلا وَرَبِّكَ لا يُؤمِنونَ حَتّىٰ يُحَكِّموكَ فيما شَجَرَ بَينَهُم ثُمَّ لا يَجِدوا في أَنفُسِهِم حَرَجًا مِمّا قَضَيتَ وَيُسَلِّموا تَسليمًا

But no, by your Lord, they won’t believe until they seek your arbitration in their disputes, then find no resistance within themselves to your decisions and fully submit themselves.

وَلَو أَنّا كَتَبنا عَلَيهِم أَنِ اقتُلوا أَنفُسَكُم أَوِ اخرُجوا مِن دِيارِكُم ما فَعَلوهُ إِلّا قَليلٌ مِنهُم ۖ وَلَو أَنَّهُم فَعَلوا ما يوعَظونَ بِهِ لَكانَ خَيرًا لَهُم وَأَشَدَّ تَثبيتًا

Had We commanded them, “Lay down your lives,” or “Abandon your homes,” only a few would have complied. If they had done what they were advised, it would’ve been better for them and strengthened their conviction.

وَلَهَدَيناهُم صِراطًا مُستَقيمًا

And We would’ve guided them to a straight path.

وَمَن يُطِعِ اللَّهَ وَالرَّسولَ فَأُولـٰئِكَ مَعَ الَّذينَ أَنعَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيهِم مِنَ النَّبِيّينَ وَالصِّدّيقينَ وَالشُّهَداءِ وَالصّالِحينَ ۚ وَحَسُنَ أُولـٰئِكَ رَفيقًا

Whoever obeys God and the Messenger will be among those whom God has blessed: the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs, and the righteous. What excellent companions they are!

ذٰلِكَ الفَضلُ مِنَ اللَّهِ ۚ وَكَفىٰ بِاللَّهِ عَليمًا

This is the bounty from God, and sufficient is God as the All-Knowing.

يا أَيُّهَا الَّذينَ آمَنوا خُذوا حِذرَكُم فَانفِروا ثُباتٍ أَوِ انفِروا جَميعًا

O you who believe, take your precautions and advance in units or advance altogether.

وَإِنَّ مِنكُم لَمَن لَيُبَطِّئَنَّ فَإِن أَصابَتكُم مُصيبَةٌ قالَ قَد أَنعَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيَّ إِذ لَم أَكُن مَعَهُم شَهيدًا

Among you, is he who hesitates. If a disaster strikes you, he would say, “God has favored me, since I wasn’t martyred with them.”
